Three Olympic gold medals in the C1 slalom canoe event establish the competitive legacy of Tony Estanguet. Born in Pau in 1978, the French athlete transitioned from an eighteen-year international racing career to a central role in the administration of the Olympic Games, eventually presiding over the organization of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Olympic and International Career
Estanguet competed at the international level between 1994 and 2012. His Olympic path commenced with a gold medal in 2000. He successfully defended his status in 2004 at the Athens Games, where a late jury decision to penalize Michal Martikán secured his victory. Following a ninth-place finish in Beijing in 2008, where he served as the flag-bearer for the French delegation, he returned to win his third gold in London in 2012. This achievement made him the first French Olympian to claim three golds in the same specific discipline. Beyond the Olympics, he earned 12 medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships, including five golds, and secured the overall C1 World Cup title in 2003 and 2004.

Raised in a family with strong ties to canoeing, Tony is the son of Henri Estanguet, a medalist at the Wildwater Canoe World Championships in the 1970s. His brother Patrice also competed at a high level, winning a bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. Estanguet attended the Lycée Louis-Barthou and later the INSEP. He pursued advanced studies at the ESSEC Business School, where he specialized in sports marketing. In collaboration with his brother Patrice, he contributed to the development of the Pau-Pyrénées Whitewater Stadium, which opened in his hometown in 2008.
Transition to Olympic Administration
Following his retirement from professional competition on 30 November 2012, Estanguet moved into the governance of international sport. He was elected to the IOC Athletes' Commission, serving as a member of the International Olympic Committee for eight years. In 2016, he was selected to lead the bid for Paris to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. After the bid proved successful, he served as the head of the organizing committee for the games. His contributions to the sporting world have been recognized with the Gold Olympic Order in 2024, as well as appointments as Officer of the Legion of Honour and Commander of the National Order of Merit.
