Wirkola studied at Bond University before launching his professional career with the 2007 film Kill Buljo, which he co-wrote with Stig Frode Henriksen. Starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, the film achieved financial success by grossing $226.3 million globally against a $50 million budget, despite encountering critical resistance. By August 2024, he began production in Australia on a survival thriller originally titled Beneath the Storm, later renamed Shiver in 2025.
