Born in Zwolle in 1944, this Dutch musician established himself as a central figure in the authentic performance movement, utilizing historical instruments and period-accurate temperaments to reanimate seventeenth and eighteenth-century repertoire.
Foundations and Education
Koopman studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he received instruction in organ from Simon C. Jansen and harpsichord from Gustav Leonhardt. His academic training included extensive study of musicology. During his formative years, he mastered the baroque practice of playing organ pedals with his toes. He secured the Prix d'Excellence for his proficiency in both organ and harpsichord, establishing a technical foundation for his subsequent academic and performing roles at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and Leiden University.

Recording Projects and Scope
Koopman’s discography encompasses a wide range of baroque and classical music, including symphonies by Haydn and Mozart, as well as works by Vivaldi and Handel. Following the conclusion of his major cantata cycle, which required him to purchase the rights from Warner Classics and finish the project on his own Antoine Marchand label, he shifted his focus to Dieterich Buxtehude. Between 2005 and 2014, he recorded the complete works of Buxtehude as part of the Opera Omnia project.
