Toby Fox

American video game designer and composer (born 1991)

A fever dream experienced in 2011 while at university served as the foundational spark for Deltarune, a project that would eventually occupy much of the creator's career. This episodic venture stands alongside Undertale as a defining achievement for the Manchester-born developer, whose output blends technical game design with a background in self-taught musical composition.

Early Influences and Technical Development

Born in 1991, Fox grew up in New Hampshire and attended Manchester Central High School. His early engagement with the medium began with RPG Maker 2000, which he used to build projects such as Toby's Adventure. By middle school, he was already participating in online gaming communities, specifically Starmen.net. There, he utilized the PK Hack editor to produce the EarthBound Halloween Hack in 2008, an effort that introduced his original composition, Megalovania, to a wider audience.

Musical Background and Homestuck

Although he received piano instruction in second grade, Fox is largely self-taught. Throughout high school, he played trumpet and performed complex piano arrangements of video game scores. His commitment to music deepened during his senior year when he began crafting covers for the webcomic Homestuck. This work attracted the attention of the comic's creator, Andrew Hussie, leading to a formal role for Fox as a production coordinator for the project's music team.

The Undertale Phenomenon

Fox enrolled at Northeastern University between 2010 and 2014, the period during which Undertale took shape. Inspired by the array data structure, he began development in 2013 by prioritizing the creation of a battle system. A Kickstarter campaign successfully raised $51,124, allowing him to complete the project for its 2015 release. The game earned significant recognition, including nominations for D.I.C.E. and British Academy Game Awards, and sold over one million copies in its first five months.

Expansion and Deltarune

Following the success of his debut title, Fox expanded his professional footprint by contributing to the soundtracks of high-profile releases, including Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and various entries in the Pokémon franchise. Since 2018, his focus has shifted toward the episodic release of Deltarune. Set in a universe parallel to his earlier work, this project fulfills the conceptual vision he originally documented while still a student.
