Early Career and Formula One Development
Monteiro began his career in 1997, competing in the Porsche Carrera Cup France, where he secured rookie of the year honors and the B-class championship. Progressing through the ranks, he finished as the runner-up in the French Formula Three Championship in both 2000 and 2001. His trajectory included a stint in the 2003 Champ Car World Series with Fittipaldi Dingman Racing and a productive 2004 season in the World Series by Nissan, where he finished second to Heikki Kovalainen while serving as an official test driver for Minardi.

In 2005, Monteiro joined the Jordan Grand Prix team. His debut season was marked by a historic third-place finish at the 2005 United States Grand Prix, becoming the first Portuguese driver to stand on a Formula One podium. That same year, he set a rookie record for consecutive race finishes, a milestone that stood until 2013. He continued with the team during its transition to Midland for the 2006 season, scoring a season-best ninth place in Hungary before his departure from the series.
Touring Car Success and Management
Moving to the World Touring Car Championship in 2007, Monteiro raced for SEAT before a long-term partnership with Honda beginning in 2012. He contributed to Honda's 2013 World Manufacturers' Championship win and achieved a career-best third-place finish in the 2016 drivers' standings. Beyond his driving duties, he owned the Ocean Racing Technology team from 2008 to 2012 and currently serves as a driver manager, notably for António Félix da Costa and his own son, Noah.
