In May 2011, Serero signed a four-year contract with AFC Ajax for a reported fee of €2.5 million. His time in Amsterdam was marked by both league success and physical challenges. After an injury-hampered first season, he secured a regular role in the midfield by 2013, notably replacing Christian Eriksen. In November 2013, he recorded his first UEFA Champions League goal against FC Barcelona. Following his departure from Ajax in 2017, he signed a three-year contract with Vitesse.
Professional Expansion into the Middle East
Serero moved to the United Arab Emirates in August 2019 to join Al Jazira. He played an integral role in the club's 2020–21 UAE Pro League title victory, which garnered him the Best Foreign Player award. In September 2023, he transitioned to Khor Fakkan to continue his career within the same league. Throughout these transitions, he maintained a reputation for consistent midfield distribution.
International Representation
Serero made his senior international debut for South Africa in February 2011 against Kenya. His career with Bafana Bafana included moments of both contribution and controversy. While he scored a crucial goal against Sudan in 2014 to help secure qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations, his tenure was also marked by a 2013 disagreement regarding match participation, leading to his temporary release from the national squad.
