Oliver Taylor Hawkins, born in Fort Worth on February 17, 1972, emerged as a prominent American percussionist and vocalist. Rising to international recognition as the drummer for the Foo Fighters, he transitioned from a background in touring support for artists such as Alanis Morissette to becoming a central figure in rock music until his death in Bogotá in 2022.
Early Development
Hawkins spent his youth in Laguna Beach, California, after his family relocated there in 1976. During his tenure at Laguna Beach High School, from which he graduated in 1990, he established social and creative connections with peers, including future Yes vocalist Jon Davison. His professional foundation began in Orange County with the experimental band Sylvia before he moved into high-profile touring roles, most notably serving as the drummer for Sass Jordan and later for Alanis Morissette throughout her 1995 to 1997 touring cycle.

In 1997, Dave Grohl recruited Hawkins to join the Foo Fighters. Though Grohl initially sought recommendations for a replacement drummer, Hawkins volunteered for the position himself. He made his debut appearance in the video for the single Monkey Wrench. Over the next two decades, his role expanded from strictly percussive duties to include songwriting, guitar, piano, and lead vocals on tracks such as Cold Day in the Sun and Sunday Rain. Between 1999 and 2021, he contributed to eight studio albums with the band and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
Collaborative and Side Projects
Beyond his primary band, Hawkins maintained various creative outlets. He formed Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders in 2004, releasing three albums between 2006 and 2019. In 2020, he established the supergroup NHC alongside Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney. His session work was extensive, covering contributions to projects by Coheed and Cambria, Eric Avery, Slash, and Brian May. He also ventured into acting, portraying Iggy Pop in the 2013 film CBGB, and led the cover bands Chevy Metal and The Birds of Satan.
