Nigerian footballer (born 1985)

Taye Taiwo began his professional ascent in France after signing with Olympique de Marseille on 10 January 2005. The Nigerian left-back, born in Lagos on 16 April 1985, transitioned from his early domestic experience with Gabros International and Lobi Stars to establish himself as a significant fixture in European association football throughout his career.

Early Career and Marseille Move

Signed for a reported 200,000 euros, Taiwo arrived in Marseille to replace Bixente Lizarazu. His debut occurred on 12 March 2005 against RC Lens. Despite an initial adjustment period, he solidified his position in the 2005–06 season. During his time at the club, he contributed to successes including one Ligue 1 title, two Coupe de la Ligue victories, and one Trophée des Champions.

European Campaigns and Discipline

Taiwo frequently participated in continental competitions, including the UEFA Intertoto Cup and UEFA Cup. In the 2005–06 campaign, he scored during a crucial win against BSC Young Boys to facilitate progress in the Intertoto Cup and helped the team qualify for the UEFA Cup knockout stage. However, his aggressive style also resulted in periodic suspensions, including red cards against Young Boys and Lyon during the 2006–07 season.

International and Subsequent Club Play

A practicing Muslim, Taiwo represented Nigeria in the 2006, 2008, and 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, and appeared at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Following his tenure in France, he joined AC Milan in 2011. His later career involved loan periods at Queens Park Rangers and Dynamo Kyiv, alongside a domestic stint with Ifeanyi Ubah F.C. later in his career.
