The career of Tamara Gverdtsiteli began in the early 1970s as a soloist with the children’s music group Mziuri, where she performed for seven years. Early Development and Education
Gverdtsiteli studied at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire, specializing in the piano department. Her background combined diverse influences, with a father from a Georgian aristocratic family and a mother whose family originated from Odessa. In June 1981, she placed second at the All-Union Contest of Young Performers of Soviet Songs in Dnipropetrovsk. She secured first place at the Red Carnation festival in Sochi later that year. Her debut solo album, Music, released in 1985, showcased her versatility by featuring songs in Russian, Georgian, and Spanish. Her profile expanded through invitations to prominent events, including the Golden Orpheus festival in Bulgaria in 1988 and the Sanremo Music Festival in 1990.
International Collaboration and Theatre
In 1991, she moved to Paris, where she worked with Michel Legrand and Jean Dréjac, leading to a debut concert at the Olympia. Her theatrical work includes the rock-opera White Crow in 1992, where she played Joan of Arc. She also appeared as Dulcinea in Man of La Mancha between 2005 and 2015, and took the title role in Carmen at the Dnipropetrovsk Opera House in 2010. Further roles included Elle in La Voix humaine and Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard.
Awards and Professional Status
Gverdtsiteli has received numerous accolades for her contributions to music and performance. Her titles include Honored Artist of the Georgian SSR, People's Artist of the Georgian SSR, and People's Artist of the Russian Federation. She was also honored with the Order of Honour, the Lenin Komsomol Prize, and the Yakir Arad award in 2022. She has served as a judge for The Voice of Ukraine and The Voice Senior.
