Background and Migration

After meeting Che Guevara during his 1960 delegation to Leipzig, Bunke moved to Cuba in 1961. She engaged with the Federation of Cuban Women and the Cuban Ministry of Education while studying at the University of Havana. Her activities included volunteer literacy campaigns and musical performances. Her commitment to Latin American revolutionary movements eventually led to her recruitment by Cuban intelligence for deep-cover operations.
Bolivian Operations and Death
Tasked with infiltrating Bolivian society in 1964, she acted under deep cover until her activities were compromised. Forced into the armed guerrilla struggle in the Ñancahuazú region, she performed duties in the rearguard, including food distribution and radio monitoring, despite suffering from a leg injury and fever. On August 31, 1967, she was killed during an ambush by the Bolivian army.
Posthumous Recovery
Following her death, her remains were buried in a secret location in Bolivia, escaping discovery for decades. In 1998, an investigation aimed at locating Che Guevara's burial site led to the recovery of her remains. She was subsequently repatriated to Cuba and interred in the Che Guevara Mausoleum, marking the conclusion of her long-concealed burial.
