Talgat Musabayev

Kazakh cosmonaut (1951–2025)

The mission of ISS EP-1, commanded by Talgat Musabayev in 2001, marked a historic turning point in orbital travel as the first flight to host a paying space tourist. Over his career, Musabayev transitioned from an aerobatic pilot and engineer to a high-ranking military officer and politician, bridging the aerospace legacy of the Soviet Union with the modernization of Kazakhstan’s national space capabilities.

Aviation and Early Career

Born in 1951 in Qarğalı, Musabayev pursued extensive technical training. He completed his studies at the Riga Civil Aviation Engineers Institute in 1974 before attending the Ulyanovsk Higher Civil Aviation School. Later, he earned an engineering diploma from the Higher Military Aviation School in Akhtubinsk in 1983. His professional life began as an aircraft pilot and engineer, eventually leading to his selection for the cosmonaut training group on 11 May 1990.

Cosmonaut Expeditions

Musabayev’s tenure in space spanned three distinct missions. His initial journey, the Mir EO-16 expedition, lasted 125 days between July and November 1994. He returned to the station in 1998 for the Mir EO-25 mission, which lasted from 29 January until 25 August. His final mission, ISS EP-1, concluded in May 2001 after eight days. Following these achievements, he retired from active flight status in November 2003.

Leadership and Political Transition

Upon ending his flight career, Musabayev ascended to senior administrative and political roles. He served as the deputy head of the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy and directed the Bayterek joint venture between 2005 and 2007. In 2007, he became the head of KazCosmos, the National Space Agency of Kazakhstan. His public service culminated in a term as a Deputy of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan from 2017 to 2023.
