Early Career and Education
Born in Ube, Yamaguchi in February 1949, Yanai attended Ube High School before enrolling at Waseda University. He graduated in 1971 with a degree in economics and political science. His professional start involved selling kitchenware and men’s clothing at a JUSCO supermarket. After one year, he moved to his father’s business, Ogori Shoji. In 1991, he rebranded this company as Fast Retailing.

Yanai engages in extensive charitable work. Following the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, he donated 1 billion yen to recovery efforts. In 2015, he established the Yanai Tadashi Foundation to support Japanese high school students attending universities in the United Kingdom and the United States, which had supported 310 recipients by September 2025. Additionally, he has provided substantial funding to the University of California, Los Angeles, through the Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities, with donations totaling $31 million in 2024 following previous grants of $2.5 million and $25 million.
Corporate Influence and Recognition
Beyond his role at Fast Retailing, Yanai served for 18 years as an independent director at the technology firm Softbank, stepping down in 2019. Industry recognition includes the 2010 International Retailer of the Year award from the National Retail Federation and placement on the 2013 Time 100 list. He also authored business titles including One Win, Nine Losses in 2003 and Throw Away Your Success in a Day in 2009.
