Early life and migration
Born in 1944 in Iskrets, Bulgaria, she moved with her family to Paris in December 1952 following the nationalization of their home. Her father, Georges Vartan, had French citizenship and Armenian roots, while her mother, Ilona, was of Hungarian descent. After initial years spent in hotels, she attended the Victor Hugo High School, where she adopted an interest in rock 'n' roll and jazz.

Her professional debut occurred in 1961 when she recorded with Frankie Jordan. Shortly after, she signed with Decca Records. Her 1962 album titled Sylvie and various EPs featured covers of international hits and original songs. By 1963, she achieved global recognition, particularly in Japan and Korea, with songs like I'm Watching You. Her career was defined by constant touring, including a notable 1964 performance at the Paris Olympia supporting The Beatles.
Performance and film career
Beyond singing, she appeared in films including Pod igoto, Un clair de lune à Maubeuge, D'où viens-tu, Johnny?, and Patate. Her stage shows evolved into elaborate productions featuring choreography, often produced in collaboration with Maritie and Gilbert Carpentier. During the late 1960s, she maintained a high profile in France and Italy with chart-topping songs such as Comme un garçon and Irrésistiblement.
Recognition and later work
Throughout her career, she received several honors, including the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 1985 and the Legion of Honour in 1998, later becoming an Officer in 2010. In 2004, she shifted her musical focus toward recording and performing jazz ballads. Her contributions to the arts were further recognized with the Order of Stara Planina in 2004 and a Victory of honor award in 2025.
