Deol debuted in the 1983 film Betaab, a commercial success that earned him his first Filmfare Award nomination. Following early romantic roles, he transitioned into action-oriented narratives. His performance as a boxer in Ghayal (1990) secured him a Filmfare Award for Best Actor and a National Film Award. Subsequent notable roles included performances in Damini, Border, and Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, the latter of which became a significant commercial milestone in Indian cinema.
