Sunil Mittal launched his industrial career in 1976 with a 20,000 rupee investment to manufacture bicycle crankshafts in Ludhiana. From these modest beginnings, he built Bharti Enterprises into a massive conglomerate, eventually overseeing a telecommunications empire that provides mobile services across India, South Asia, and Africa while securing a landmark market capitalization of US$100 billion by 2024.
Early Industrial Ventures
Born in 1957 in Ludhiana, Punjab, Mittal attended Arya College and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Panjab University in 1976. Following his entry into the bicycle component market, he diversified into producing shoddy yarn and stainless steel. By 1980, he formed Bharti Overseas Trading Company to manage imports, eventually distributing Suzuki portable generators until government restrictions curtailed that activity in 1983.

Mittal transitioned to telecommunications in the mid-1980s by identifying demand for push-button telephones. He founded Bharti Telecom Limited in 1985 and partnered with Siemens AG to produce Beetel-branded devices. By 1992, the group entered the services market, launching mobile operations in Delhi in 1995. The company went public in 2002, reaching two million subscribers shortly after the launch of the IndiaOne service.
Global Expansion and Infrastructure
The company scaled rapidly through strategic partnerships and acquisitions. In 2010, Bharti acquired Zain Group’s operations across 15 African nations for US$10.7 billion. Infrastructure development also became a key pillar, with the formation of Bharti Infratel in 2007, which later merged with Indus Towers. Today, Mittal serves as Co-Chairman of Eutelsat and maintains board roles at BT Group Plc.

Mittal has served in numerous high-level international business roles, including leadership positions at the International Chamber of Commerce and the GSM Association.
