A seven-hour spacewalk performed in April 2023 marked a transition for the United Arab Emirates in global space exploration. As part of the six-month Expedition 69 mission to the International Space Station, Sultan Al Niadi became the first Arab astronaut to exit the station, conducting external maintenance tasks while orbiting the Earth.
Educational Background and Early Service
Born in 1981 in Umm Ghafa, Abu Dhabi, Al Niadi pursued rigorous technical training. He completed his secondary education in his home region before moving abroad for higher studies. He holds a Bachelor of Science in electronics and communications engineering from the University of Brighton. Later, he earned both a Master of Science and a PhD in information technology from Griffith University in 2008 and 2012, respectively. Before his selection for space missions, he served in the UAE Armed Forces as a network security engineer.

In 2018, the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre selected Al Niadi from over 4,000 candidates for the UAE Astronaut Programme. His preparation spanned five years, exceeding 1,400 training hours across more than 90 individual courses. This included specialized instruction at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Moscow, NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, and additional programs in Cologne. His curriculum covered survival techniques for water and winter environments, centrifuge simulation for high g-forces, and mastery of the Extravehicular Mobility Unit.
Operations Aboard the International Space Station
Al Niadi launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on 2 March 2023, as part of the SpaceX Crew-6 mission. During his time on the International Space Station, he contributed to over 20 research experiments involving international partners including NASA, ESA, CSA, JAXA, and CNES. These studies ranged from cardiovascular research to human physiology in low-pressure environments. He also distinguished himself by training in jiu-jitsu, utilizing the discipline to maintain focus during his long-duration mission, and becoming the first person to wear a gi while in space.
Government Service
Following the conclusion of his space mission, Al Niadi moved into national administration. On 11 January 2024, he was sworn in as the UAE Minister of State for Youth Affairs. This position marks his transition from technical and research operations within the space sector to a governmental role focusing on youth development and national policy.
