Sufyan al-Thawri was born at Kufa in 716.
Learning in this period moved through courts, monasteries and madrasas, and a scholar's reach depended on which libraries and translations were within travelling distance.
His research centred on science of hadith and tafsir.
Physiology advanced through experiments whose ethics each generation has had to re-argue.
The measure that matters is durability. Results that survive re-examination become the floor of a discipline, and it is on that floor that everything afterwards is built.
Death came in 784, at 68. By then the contribution had passed into the settled body of physiology, where it is used without being credited - the surest sign that it was right.
