Academic Roots and Radicalization
Born in Tampico in 1957, Rafael Sebastián Guillén Vicente grew up in a middle-class household. He pursued studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where he focused on philosophy and literature. By the early 1980s, he transitioned into teaching at the Autonomous Metropolitan University. During this period, he engaged with the National Liberation Forces, a guerrilla group that influenced his departure from academia. In 1984, he relocated to Chiapas to advocate for revolutionary change.

The Zapatista Army of National Liberation formed in 1983 as a self-defense unit for Mayan communities facing displacement. Although not indigenous himself, Marcos rose to become the group's military leader and chief spokesperson. Following the initial 1994 uprising and subsequent ceasefire, his function shifted from military strategy to public communication. He led delegations to Mexico City in 2001 to address the Mexican Congress and spearheaded the 2006 Other Campaign to build national support.
Literary Contributions and Identity
Beyond his political activities, Marcos is a prolific author. His bibliography includes titles such as Our Word Is Our Weapon, The Story of Colors, and the crime novel The Uncomfortable Dead. His writing ranges from anti-capitalist communiqués to children's stories and poetry. In 2014, he declared the persona of Subcomandante Marcos a hologram, subsequently adopting names like Subcomandante Insurgente Galeano and, as of October 2023, Capitán Insurgente Marcos to reflect shifting internal leadership structures within the Clandestine Revolutionary Indigenous Committee.
