Stig Anderson oversaw 767 published music titles and served as the driving commercial force behind the global success of ABBA. A self-taught entrepreneur and lyricist, he built a Swedish media empire that utilized innovative international distribution deals, including the notable exchange of record sales for barrels of oil within the Soviet Union.
Early Career and Songwriting
Born in 1931 in Hova, Sweden, Anderson initially worked as a primary school teacher for mathematics and chemistry. He began his professional music career in 1951, eventually gaining industry prominence with his 1959 hit song Är du kär i mej ännu Klas-Göran? written for Lill-Babs. During the 1960s, he established himself as a prolific songwriter and formed his own publishing house, Sweden Music.

Anderson co-founded Polar Music alongside Bengt Bernhag. He managed major Swedish acts, earning the nickname The Business for his ability to place multiple artists in the national Top 10 simultaneously. His strategy often involved rapid acquisition and translation of American hit songs to ensure quick domestic releases. In 1969, he was honored as Lyricist of the Year at the first Grammis Awards.
Management of ABBA
As the commercial architect for ABBA, Anderson co-wrote lyrics for significant tracks including Waterloo and Dancing Queen. He acted as the group's manager and primary label owner, holding a majority stake in Polar Music. His business model faced significant challenges in the 1980s due to unfavorable market shifts, rising credit rates, and mismanagement of the company's financial assets.
Legal Disputes and Later Years
In 1990, members of ABBA initiated legal action against Anderson over royalty disputes, alleging he retained a 4.5 million euro share of profits under broad contract terms. The parties reached an out-of-court settlement in 1991. Shortly before these proceedings, Anderson sold Polar Music to PolyGram. He used the proceeds to establish the Polar Music Prize in 1989. Anderson died of a heart attack in 1997.
