Stevie Wonder: The Twenty-First Birthday
On 13 May 1971 he turned twenty-one, and the Motown contract he had signed at eleven lapsed. Most child stars renew and hope. Wonder walked, negotiated for two months, and came back in July with a deal carrying a fourteen per cent royalty and something Motown had never given anyone: control of his own records. Over the next five years he made a run of albums that took the Grammy for Album of the Year three times in succession — a feat no other artist has managed with three consecutive releases.
Saginaw
Stevland Hardaway Morris was born on 13 May 1950 in Saginaw, Michigan, six weeks premature. In the incubator, oxygen-rich air stopped the growth of his eyes and detached his retinas — retinopathy of prematurity, then a common and poorly understood hazard of neonatal care. He has been blind since infancy. When he was four his mother moved the family to Detroit, which happened to be the city where Berry Gordy was building a record company.
Little Stevie
At eleven he was heard performing a song called "Lonely Boy" by Ronnie White of the Miracles, who took him to a Motown audition. Gordy signed him to the Tamla label, and the producer Clarence Paul supplied the marketing: Little Stevie Wonder.
The gimmick worked almost immediately and then became a problem. "Fingertips (Pt. 2)," a live harmonica workout released in 1963, went to number one when he was thirteen, making him the youngest solo artist ever to top the American chart. What followed was eight years as a Motown asset — a house system with house writers, house producers and a house sound, in which the label decided what its artists recorded. Wonder had hits inside it, including "My Cherie Amour." He did not have a say.
The Renegotiation
The 1971 renegotiation is the hinge of his career and one of the shrewdest moves any musician has made. The contract signed by a minor expired on his majority; rather than sign a variation, he let it lapse entirely, which removed Motown's leverage.
He had also worked out what he wanted to do with the freedom. Hearing the electronic records of the TONTO Expanding Head Band, he hired their creators, Robert Margouleff and Malcolm Cecil, and put their enormous modular synthesiser at the centre of his sound. The new contract, signed in July 1971, gave him the royalty rate and the creative autonomy. He was twenty-one and now had a recording studio, an instrument nobody else in soul music was using, and no one to ask.

*Music of My Mind* (1972) opened the run. *Talking Book*, later the same year, contained "Superstition," a riff built on a rhythmic figure so heavy it functioned as an argument. He spent June and July 1972 as the support act on the Rolling Stones' American tour, which pushed his music across to white rock audiences without his changing a note of it.
*Innervisions* followed in 1973, harder in subject and tone. *Fulfillingness' First Finale* came in 1974, and *Songs in the Key of Life* — a double album with a bonus EP — in 1976. It became the first record by an American artist to debut straight at number one, and it held the position for fourteen non-consecutive weeks. Those three albums each took the Grammy for Album of the Year.
What made the run singular was not the songwriting alone but the totality. Wonder played piano, synthesiser, harmonica, congas, drums, bongos, organ, melodica and Clavinet, and on much of this material he played nearly everything himself, wrote it, sang it and produced it. The albums are the work of one person in a room with machines, at a moment when that was not how records were made.
Interstate 85
The peak nearly ended in the middle of it. Within three days of *Innervisions*, on 6 August 1973, Wonder's rental car struck a flatbed truck on Interstate 85 in North Carolina. He suffered a fractured skull and a cerebral contusion, lost his sense of taste temporarily and part of his sense of smell permanently. He was back on record the following year with *Fulfillingness' First Finale*, which won the first of the three consecutive Album of the Year awards.
The Campaigns
He kept innovating past the peak. *Journey Through "The Secret Life of Plants"* (1979) was his first digital recording and one of the earliest popular albums made with the technology — commercially a misstep, technically ahead of the industry.
The politics ran alongside. His 1980 single "Happy Birthday" was written as a campaign tool to make Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a federal holiday, and the campaign succeeded. When "I Just Called to Say I Love You" won the Academy Award for Best Song in 1984, he accepted it "in the name of Nelson Mandela," and the South African government responded by banning his music from all state radio. He worked with Paul McCartney on "Ebony and Ivory" and appeared on Michael Jackson's *Bad*.
Why Stevie Is Called a Genius
Britannica's formulation is "one of the most creative musical figures of the late 20th century," which is careful and probably right. The particular faculty is integration: Wonder is one of very few musicians who has been simultaneously first-rate as songwriter, singer, instrumentalist, arranger and producer, and who has combined all five inside a single record without a committee.
The cognitive dimension is real and specific, and it is worth stating without sentimentality. Working blind, he could not read a score, write a chart, or check a mix against notation. Every arrangement — multi-part, multi-instrument, harmonically dense — had to be constructed and held in memory and executed by ear, layer by layer, and then communicated verbally to engineers. That is a different working method from any of his contemporaries, and the ten instruments he plays are the tools of it rather than a party trick.
The counter-case is that the reputation rests almost entirely on five years. The output after 1980 is generally held to be far weaker, and the Academy's award went to one of his slightest songs a decade after the albums that earned him the standing. The classic sound was not his alone either: Margouleff and Cecil's engineering was constitutive, not incidental, and they have never received credit proportionate to it. And the "blind genius" framing has often been used to make him inspirational rather than to take him seriously as what he mainly was — a working musician who read a contract better than his label did.
Legacy
Wonder has won twenty-five Grammy Awards, more than any other solo artist, plus a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996. He entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014. Ghana conferred citizenship on him in 2024. He has sold over 100 million records.
Rolling Stone has ranked him the seventh greatest singer of all time; the New York Times placed him among the greatest living American songwriters in 2026. The critical consensus has settled where it usually does with him — that the five albums between 1972 and 1976 constitute one of the strongest runs in the history of popular music, and that they exist because a twenty-one-year-old let a contract expire on his birthday.
