Stevan Pilipović

Serbian mathematician

Stevan Pilipović holds a position in the mathematical community as a specialist in functional analysis, generalized functions, and pseudo-differential operators. Born in 1950 in Novi Sad, he has dedicated his career to the development of complex mathematical research at the University of Novi Sad, where he has maintained an active teaching and leadership presence since 1987.

Academic Foundation and Career

Pilipović completed his undergraduate studies in mathematics at the University of Novi Sad in 1973. He continued his formal education with a Master of Science degree from the University of Belgrade in 1977, followed by the attainment of his PhD in 1979. In 1988, he solidified his tenure at the University of Novi Sad, where he has since operated as a member of the Department of Mathematics and Informatics. His professional scope expanded in 2009 when he was inducted as an academician into the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, where he now serves as the president of the Novi Sad branch.

Research and Editorial Contributions

His primary research interests bridge the gap between theoretical mathematics and practical mechanics, specifically focusing on linear and nonlinear equations with singularities, time-frequency analysis, and hyperfunctions. He serves as the leader of the Center for Mathematical Research in Nonlinear Phenomena at the Faculty of Science of Novi Sad University. Additionally, he manages editorial duties as the editor-in-chief of Publ. Inst. Math. (Beograd). His extensive bibliography includes significant monographs such as Asymptotic of Generalized Functions and the Stieltjes Transformation of Distributions and a two-volume series on fractional calculus with applications in mechanics published by ISTE-Wiley.

Public Criticism and Legal Proceedings

Pilipović has been the subject of public scrutiny regarding his professional conduct. Dr. Filip Rake Vukajlović, a Serbian academic whistleblower, issued public criticisms directed at the work of Pilipović, highlighting potential conflicts of interest. Specifically, allegations surfaced concerning Pilipović’s tenure as chair of the Scientific Council of the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, where he reportedly failed to disclose family interests when his two daughters applied for project funding. In response to these public statements, Pilipović initiated a civil lawsuit against Dr. Vukajlović for emotional distress, a move described in some circles as a strategic lawsuit against public participation.
