His career path shifted from the inheritance of the Eternit building materials business to a focus on sustainable development, philanthropy, and later, prolonged international litigation regarding historical occupational hazards.
Early Career and Industrial Expansion
Born on 29 October 1947 in Balgach, Switzerland, Stephan Ernst Schmidheiny is the son of Max Schmidheiny and Adda Scherrer. His great-grandfather, Jacob Schmidheiny, established the family fortune through Eternit, a company specializing in asbestos-based industrial manufacturing. Stephan Schmidheiny earned a PhD in Law from the University of Zurich in 1972. By 1976, he served as CEO of the Swiss Eternit Group. Following a strategic division of the family industrial empire by his father, Stephan assumed control of the asbestos interests while his brother, Thomas, took the cement business. Schmidheiny eventually exited asbestos manufacturing, diversifying his holdings into sectors including consumer goods, banking, electronic equipment, and forestry. In 1985, he supported Nicolas Hayek’s bid for the Société de Microélectronique et d'Horlogerie, playing a role in the restructuring of the Swiss watch industry.

Schmidheiny shifted his focus toward sustainability and social development throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He acted as a sustainability adviser to the United Nations and the OECD. He authored the 1992 book, Change of Course: Global Business Prospects for Development and the Environment, and contributed to Financing Change. He founded the organization FUNDES to assist small and medium-sized enterprises in Latin America. Additionally, he established the Fundación Avina to foster social and business alliances, implementing microfinance initiatives. Beyond these projects, he manages the Daros Collection, an art assemblage focusing on North American and European works from the latter half of the 20th century.
Legal Proceedings in Italy
Since 2012, Schmidheiny has faced sustained litigation in Italy regarding the impact of asbestos at former Eternit production sites. In 2019, a Turin court sentenced him to four years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. Further legal action in 2023 resulted in a twelve-year prison sentence for aggravated manslaughter regarding the deaths of 392 individuals in Casale Monferrato. In October 2025, the Turin Court of Appeals reduced this sentence to nine years and six months. Despite these rulings, as of 2026, none of the convictions are enforceable. Schmidheiny has established funds for victims in South Africa and Italy to address health consequences arising from asbestos exposure where no successor companies remained to provide financial support.
