Early Career and Domestic Rise
The son of former player Alekos, Giannakopoulos began his path at Ethnikos Asteras in the Kaisariani neighbourhood. He moved to the professional level in 1991, helping the club reach the Third Division. By 1993, he moved to Paniliakos, where he recorded 26 goals across 84 appearances. During seven seasons in Athens, Giannakopoulos was a regular contributor as Olympiacos secured the Greek championship each year. He notched 189 appearances and 63 goals in all competitions. A career hallmark occurred when he scored the club's first Champions League goal against Porto with a 40-meter lob. In his final season, 2003, he netted 15 goals, including two in a critical 3-0 victory over Panathinaikos.
Premier League Stint with Bolton
In May 2003, he transitioned to Bolton Wanderers, choosing to display 'Stelios' on his kit to simplify his name for English media. Under manager Sam Allardyce, he became a fixture in the side, helping reach the 2004 Football League Cup Final. His most productive season came in 2005-06, when he finished as the club’s top scorer with 12 goals. Despite injury struggles in subsequent years, he provided vital late goals to aid the team, including a decisive strike against Tottenham Hotspur in April 2008.
Final Playing Years
After departing Bolton, Giannakopoulos joined Hull City in September 2008 for their inaugural Premier League campaign. Limited to sporadic appearances, he sought a return to Greece in January 2009. Signing an 18-month deal with AEL, he immediately contributed three goals. His professional playing career spanned from 1992 through his time at AEL.
