A leap of 2.09 metres during the 1987 World Championships in Athletics in Rome established Stefka Kostadinova as the woman to beat in high jump for over three decades. This record remained the global standard for nearly thirty-seven years until it was finally surpassed in 2024, cementing her reputation as a dominant force in track and field.
Early Development and Breakthrough
Born in Plovdiv in 1965, Kostadinova attended a specialist sports school in Bulgaria. Her introduction to high jump occurred during a regional athletics meet in Sofia while she was between the ages of twelve and thirteen. This event marked the beginning of a trajectory that saw her secure seven world records throughout her career, consisting of three outdoor and four indoor performances. Over her active years, she achieved the milestone of jumping over 2.00 metres on 197 occasions.
