Stefano Pessina

Italian businessman and CEO of Walgreens

Taking control of his family's Naples-based pharmaceutical wholesaler in 1977, Stefano Pessina transformed a local enterprise into a massive multinational pharmaceutical wholesale operation. The transition from his initial career path in nuclear engineering to the pharmaceutical sector defined his trajectory, leading him to manage some of the largest retail pharmacy chains in existence today.

Academic Foundation and Early Career

Born in Pescara in 1941, Pessina spent his formative years residing in Milan, Como, and Naples. He pursued studies at the Polytechnic University of Milan, graduating with a degree in nuclear engineering. Although he originally intended to work as a nuclear physicist, the political instability characterizing Italy during the 1970s prompted him to pivot toward the corporate sector. His early professional experience included a stint at the market research firm ACNielsen.

Consolidation of Pharmaceutical Interests

Pessina entered the pharmaceutical industry in 1977 by assuming management of his family firm, which he reorganized as Alleanza Farmaceutica. Following a merger with Di Farma, he co-founded Alleanza Salute in 1986, which evolved into the Franco-Italian group Alliance Santé by 1988. Further expansion occurred in 1997 through a merger with UniChem, forming Alliance UniChem. Pessina served as the organization's CEO from 2001 until 2004, later serving as deputy chairman and chairman.

Walgreens Boots Alliance and Leadership

The business underwent significant structural changes in 2006 when Alliance UniChem merged with Boots, eventually moving to a private ownership model in July 2007. Pessina chaired Alliance Boots until 2014, subsequently becoming the executive chairman of Walgreens Boots Alliance. In July 2020, he transitioned from his role as CEO to focus on his executive chairmanship. His leadership tenure concluded following the company's 2025 acquisition by Sycamore Partners.

Public Commentary and Recognition

During a 2015 interview with The Sunday Telegraph, Pessina described the potential success of the British Labour Party in the upcoming general election as a catastrophe. His remarks regarding the party's business policies drew sharp public criticism from Labour figures such as Chuka Umunna and Ed Miliband, who questioned his tax contributions and residency. Despite these public frictions, he has received numerous professional honors, including the Grand Official of the Order of the Star of Italy in 2013 and induction into the World Retail Hall of Fame in 2018.
