Professional Playing Career
Born in 1962 in Neunkirchen, Kuntz began his professional journey in 1983, maintaining a career that lasted until 1999. During his tenure in the Bundesliga, he recorded 449 appearances and scored 179 goals. He represented VfL Bochum, Bayer 05 Uerdingen, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, and Arminia Bielefeld. His output resulted in him becoming the Bundesliga top scorer in 1986 and 1994, and earning the German Footballer of the Year award in 1991. Beyond Germany, he played for the Turkish side Beşiktaş J.K. after joining in 1995.

Kuntz competed for his national team between 1993 and 1997. He participated in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, playing in the round of sixteen. His performance at UEFA Euro 1996 proved pivotal; he replaced the injured Jürgen Klinsmann during the semi-final against England, scoring the equalizing goal and converting the fifth penalty in the shootout. This victory contributed to his record of 25 undefeated caps.
Coaching and Management
Following his retirement as a player, Kuntz moved into administration and coaching. He served as the athletic director of VfL Bochum from 2006 to 2008 and as board chairman of 1. FC Kaiserslautern between 2008 and 2016. As coach of the Germany U21 team, he reached the UEFA European Under-21 Championship final three times, winning the tournament in 2017 and 2021. He later managed the Turkey national team from September 2021 until his dismissal in September 2023.
Hamburger SV and Internal Investigation
Kuntz served as the sporting director at Hamburger SV from May 2024 until late December 2025. Following his departure, the club confirmed an internal investigation regarding allegations of inappropriate conduct. The supervisory board noted that these claims were deemed credible after review with legal counsel. Kuntz has publicly rejected these allegations, describing them as false, and his legal representatives have indicated an intention to take action against the reports.
