Stefan Korboński served as the final Government Delegate for Poland, acting as a crucial authority within the clandestine Polish Secret State during the German occupation. A trained lawyer and agrarian politician, he transitioned from a military volunteer in the Polish-Soviet War to an active journalist and advocate for the Polish diaspora after fleeing the rise of Stalinist rule in his home country.
Military and Academic Formation
Born in 1901 in Praszka, Korboński participated in the Defence of Lwów as a volunteer in 1918. He subsequently served in the Polish Army during the Polish-Soviet War and the Third Silesian Uprising. Following these conflicts, he earned a law degree from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. By 1929, he established a private legal practice in Warsaw while rising through the ranks of the People's Party, eventually chairing the Białystok Voivodeship branch by 1936.

Mobilized as a First Lieutenant in 1939, Korboński survived imprisonment by the NKVD to help build the Union of Armed Struggle and the Armia Krajowa. He led the Directorate of Civil Resistance, which coordinated civilian opposition and managed an underground court system. Notably, he alerted London-based authorities to the slaughter of Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto. During the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, he functioned as the chief of the Department of Internal Affairs.
Post-war Exile and Advocacy
After the war, Korboński held a seat in the Sejm before the solidification of communist control forced him into exile in the United States. He remained politically active within the Polish Council of Unity and continued his career as a journalist. He authored numerous works concerning the Polish underground and the history of the resistance, including W imieniu Rzeczypospolitej and The Jews and the Poles in World War II.
