He joined the faculty at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven for part-time teaching in 2002, transitioning to an associate professorship in 2006 and reaching the rank of full professor in 2009.

His international engagements include serving as a visiting professor at Pierre and Marie Curie University in 2009 and Paris Diderot University in 2011, having previously completed his habilitation at the latter in 2004. He held the Peccot Chair at the Collège de France in 2005. At the 2010 International Congress of Mathematicians in Hyderabad, he presented findings regarding rigidity for von Neumann algebras and their invariants.
Recognition and Institutional Service
Professional recognition for his contributions has included the Cours Peccot in 2004, the Prize of the Flemish Scientific Foundation in 2012, and the Francqui Prize in 2015.
