Stavros Niarchos

Greek businessman and art collector (1909–1996)

The SS Spyros Niarchos, launched by Vickers Armstrongs Shipbuilders Ltd in 1955, stood as the world's largest oil supertanker at the time of its completion. This vessel became a definitive symbol of the global shipping empire built by Stavros Niarchos, whose fleet grew to include over 80 tankers and established him as a dominant force in international petroleum transport.

Early Career and Naval Service

Born in Athens in 1909 to parents who had operated a business in Buffalo, New York, Stavros Niarchos returned to Greece to study law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He initially entered the grain trade with the Koumantaros family. His influence shifted the firm toward ship ownership, a move that predated his emergence as a major maritime entrepreneur. During World War II, he served as a naval officer, losing a portion of his existing trade fleet to conflict before utilizing two million dollars in insurance settlements to reconstruct his maritime interests.

Expansion and Rivalry

The post-war era saw Niarchos emerge as a billionaire through strategic investment in large-tonnage tankers. The 1956 Suez Canal Crisis significantly increased market demand for these vessels, cementing his financial status. He maintained a notable rivalry with fellow shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, as both men competed to build the world's largest supertankers. Beyond his corporate reach, Niarchos became an art collector and a prominent figure in the thoroughbred horse racing industry, eventually topping the French breeder's list three times between 1989 and 1994.

Personal Life and Estate

Niarchos married five times, starting with Helen Sporides in 1930. His third marriage, to Eugenia Livanos, resulted in four children, while his fourth marriage to Charlotte Ford produced a daughter, Elena Ford. He died in 1996 in Zurich and is buried at the Bois-de-Vaux Cemetery. His estate, estimated at 12 billion dollars at his death, was divided among his children, with the notable exception of Elena Ford, who subsequently initiated litigation in Swiss and Greek courts regarding her inheritance.
