Early Life and Background
Søren Abildgaard was born in 1718 within the borders of Flekkefjord Municipality and Kristiansand Municipality. He operated during a period when artistic institutions heavily influenced the definition of acceptable subjects and training protocols. His personal life included a marriage to Anne Margrethe Bastholm, with whom he had two sons, Peter Christian Abildgaard, born in 1740, and Nicolai Abraham Abildgaard, born in 1744.

The scientific output of Abildgaard focused primarily on the natural landscape of Denmark. In 1759, he produced an account concerning the fossil-bearing chalk beds and chert at Stevns Klint, titled Beskrivelse over Stevens Klint og dens naturlige Mærkværdigheder. His further contributions to mineralogical literature included the 1765 treatise Afhandling om Tørv, which discussed peat, and a 1781 work titled Physisk-mineralogisk Beskrivelse over Möens klint, providing a description of Møns Klint.
Illustrations and Research
Abildgaard conducted extensive travels across Denmark to document runes, tombstones, and historic monuments through drawings. During 1753, he accompanied historian Jacob Langebek on a tour through Sweden and the Baltic provinces in his capacity as a painter and illustrator. His collected drawings serve as essential references for antiquarian research today. These records are held in the collections of the National Museum of Denmark and the Frederiksborg Museum in Hillerød.
