Early Development and Domestic Success
Born in Kolkata in 1972, Ganguly was the youngest son of Chandidas and Nirupa Ganguly. Despite his family's print business wealth, his path to professional cricket was initially met with resistance. Encouraged by his brother Snehasish, Ganguly eventually refined his skills using left-handed equipment despite being right-handed. He performed for the Bengal cricket team following his first-class debut in 1989. His heavy scoring in the 1993–94 and 1994–95 Ranji Trophy seasons paved the way for a return to the national setup.

Following a difficult 1992 ODI debut against the West Indies, Ganguly established his international reputation during a 1996 tour of England. He scored a century on debut at Lord's, a feat shared by few others in cricket history. He followed this with a 136-run performance at Trent Bridge. These efforts were bolstered by a 255-run partnership with Sachin Tendulkar, which stood as the highest Indian partnership outside of India at the time. He later secured a string of man-of-the-match awards during the 1997 Sahara Cup.
Captaincy and Record Standing
Ganguly is remembered for his tenure as captain of the Indian national team. Under his leadership, the team secured the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy and reached finals in the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy, the 2004 Asia Cup, and the 2003 Cricket World Cup. He remains the third batsman to surpass 10,000 runs in ODI cricket. Additionally, his 183-run innings remains the highest individual score by an Indian batsman in an ODI World Cup match.
Administrative Role and Personal Life
After retiring from international cricket in 2008 and from all professional formats in 2012, Ganguly transitioned into sports administration. He was elected president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 2019 and contributed to a probe panel investigating IPL spot-fixing. Married to dancer Dona Ganguly, with whom he has a daughter named Sana, he experienced a health crisis in 2021 when he suffered a mild heart attack requiring angioplasty.
