Spinello Aretino

Italian painter (c.1350–c.1410)

Spinello Aretino is remembered for work the next generation could not ignore.

The record lists Spinello Aretino as Italian painter (c.1350–c.1410).

Spinello Aretino was born at Arezzo in 1350.

Workshops rather than individuals produced most work in this period, and attribution is often a modern reconstruction.

He worked as painter.

Among his best-known works are Mystical marriage of Saint Catherine, Saint Stephen and Triptych of Madonna enthroned with child and saints. A painting outlives the argument about it, which is the only durable form of an artistic reputation.

Spinello Aretino died in 1410, aged 60. The work remains, hanging in collections that outlived both the artist and the market that first priced it.
