Formative Years
Born in Phiri, Soweto, on 25 September 1984, Tshabalala was the first of two children born to Isaac Tshabalala and Hadifele Rebecca Makhubu. During his upbringing, he resided in a face brick house owned by his grandparents alongside his sister, Mpumi, and his cousins. He attended Seanamarena Secondary School, where he originally pursued interests outside of athletics.

After early spells with Alexandra United and Free State Stars, Tshabalala joined the Kaizer Chiefs academy. He formally signed with the senior squad in January 2007 following Free State Stars' relegation. His debut occurred on 31 August 2007 in a match against Bidvest Wits. During his tenure, he achieved 372 appearances and scored 58 goals, earning multiple individual honors including the SAFA Footballer of the Year.
International Performance
Tshabalala holds the distinction of being the first player to receive a national team call-up while playing in the National First Division. He made his debut against Egypt on 14 January 2006. Accumulating 90 caps for the national side, he participated in the 2006, 2008, and 2013 African Cup of Nations, as well as the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup.
Global Transitions and Personal Life
In August 2018, he transitioned to the Turkish club Büyükşehir Belediye Erzurumspor. He returned to South Africa in October 2020 to join AmaZulu F.C. on a one-year deal. Away from the pitch, he married Bokang Montjane in 2016, and the couple welcomed their son, Owami, in February 2015.
