Political Foundations
Harris initiated his political engagement as a teenager by establishing the North Wicklow Triple A Alliance to support families with autistic children. After joining Fine Gael, he was elected to the Wicklow County Council in 2009. He gained entry to the Dáil Éireann in 2011, serving as the youngest deputy in the 31st Dáil. During his initial parliamentary term, he participated in the Public Accounts Committee and introduced the Mental Health (Anti-Discrimination) Bill 2013.

In 2014, he became the Minister of State at the Department of Finance. Following the 2016 general election, he was promoted to Minister for Health. His tenure included navigating the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act 2018 following the referendum to repeal the constitutional ban on abortion. Between 2020 and 2024, he served as Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. He also held the Justice, Home Affairs and Migration portfolio from 2022 to 2023.
Tenure as Taoiseach
Following the resignation of Leo Varadkar, Harris was elected leader of Fine Gael and appointed Taoiseach on 9 April 2024. His time as head of government was marked by significant digital communication, earning him the public moniker of the TikTok Taoiseach. His executive service continued through 2025, during which he held the positions of Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Minister for Defence, eventually transitioning to his role as Tánaiste and Minister for Finance.
