Early Career and Theatrical Roots
Before transitioning to feature films, Tsukamoto studied at Nihon University and founded a theatre group that included collaborators Kei Fujiwara, Nobu Kanaoka, and Tomorowo Taguchi. One of their stage productions, The Adventures of Electric Rod Boy, provided the foundation for his shift into cinematography. Tsukamoto gained international attention with the 1989 release of Tetsuo: The Iron Man, a black-and-white 16 mm production that established his status within the body horror genre. He continued this trajectory with the color 35 mm follow-up, Tetsuo II: Body Hammer, in 1992, which expanded upon the themes of human-machine mutation. His subsequent works, including Tokyo Fist, Bullet Ballet, and A Snake of June, frequently examined the transformative potential of rage and interpersonal competition.

Throughout his career, Tsukamoto has maintained a dual role as both director and actor, appearing in the majority of his own projects. He has also performed under other directors, including Takashi Miike, Hideaki Anno, and Martin Scorsese.
