Shinji Higuchi entered the Japanese film industry in 1984 as an assistant modeler on The Return of Godzilla. Since that debut, the Shinjuku-born director has established a career centered on tokusatsu and animation, contributing to major titles such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and the massive kaiju production Shin Godzilla, ultimately becoming a central figure in modern Japanese cinema.
Early Career and Education
Born in Shinjuku in 1965, Higuchi spent time at Toho Studios during his junior high years, where he observed special effects production. After failing his university entrance exams, he spent time working for the Japanese Post Office. By 1984, he joined the film industry. His early creative contributions included directing special effects for the Daicon tokusatsu fan film Yamata no Orochi no Gyakushū. In 1992, he produced and directed his own disaster film, The Day the Sun Fissured: The Great Tokyo Earthquake, for the Tokyo Fire Department.

Higuchi played a fundamental role in the production of Neon Genesis Evangelion in 1995, acting as a writer and storyboarder. The show's protagonist, Shinji Ikari, was named after him. His transition to prominent feature filmmaking accelerated with Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, which earned him the Special Technology Award at the 19th Japan Academy Film Prize. He later directed the 2005 feature Lorelei: The Witch of the Pacific Ocean and the 2006 film Sinking of Japan.
Directorial Successes
The director collaborated with Hideaki Anno on the 2016 kaiju film Shin Godzilla, which secured them the Director of the Year award at the 40th Japan Academy Film Prize. His 2015 adaptation of the Attack on Titan manga, produced in two parts, received an Excellence in Theatrical Live Action Film award at the 2016 VFX-JAPAN Awards. His 2022 project, Shin Ultraman, achieved commercial success in Japan and received international critical attention.
Personal Stances
Higuchi maintains public support for whaling in Japan and expresses skepticism toward veganism. In 2023, he participated in a pro-whaling documentary produced by Keiko Yagi. Within this production, Higuchi suggested a connection between the character of Godzilla and environmental issues, advocating for the management of whale populations to preserve fish stocks.
