Aziz joined Citibank Pakistan in 1969 as a credit officer. Over several decades, he held leadership roles across various countries, including Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, and the United States. While operating from the Empire State Building in New York City, he served as executive vice-president of Citibank and president of Citi Private Bank. His expertise focused on corporate and investment banking, financial planning, and global fund management.
Political Transition and Ministerial Role
In November 1999, Aziz moved from the corporate sector to government service at the invitation of Pervez Musharraf. As Federal Minister for Finance, he initiated the privatization of state-owned enterprises and sought to attract foreign direct investment through structural taxation reforms. His tenure involved managing economic relations with international financial institutions, including the World Bank and the U.S. Treasury, particularly regarding debt relief and public development aid.
Prime Ministership
Following the resignation of Zafarullah Khan Jamali, Aziz assumed the office of Prime Minister of Pakistan on 28 August 2004. He held this position until 15 November 2007. Upon the conclusion of his term, he departed Pakistan and relocated to the United Kingdom.
