Born Balbir Raj Kapoor in 1938, Shashi Kapoor began his life in cinema as a child performer in his father Prithviraj Kapoor’s theatrical troupe. Over nearly seven decades, he evolved from a stage-trained youth into one of India's most commercially successful leading men and a dedicated producer, eventually securing the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his extensive contributions to the national film industry.
Early Roles and Artistic Foundation
Before his emergence as a primary adult lead, Kapoor gained fundamental experience in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Performing under the name Shashiraj to distinguish himself from existing actors, he appeared in films including Aag, Awaara, Sangram, and Dana Paani. These early roles often required him to portray younger versions of characters played by his brother, Raj Kapoor, or other contemporaries like Ashok Kumar and Bharat Bhushan.

Kapoor made his debut as an adult actor in 1961 with the political drama Dharmputra, directed by Yash Chopra. This period proved challenging as his early works, including Char Diwari, struggled to find financial success. He expanded his reach in 1963 by participating in his first English-language project, The Householder, directed by James Ivory. By 1965, his fortunes shifted significantly with the back-to-back hits Waqt and the romantic musical Jab Jab Phool Khile, the latter of which earned him a BFJA Award for his portrayal of a boatman.
Stardom and Critical Acclaim
The year 1974 marked a surge in his career following the blockbuster success of the action-comedy Chor Machaye Shor and the social drama Roti Kapada Aur Makaan. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he maintained his status as a top-tier performer, appearing in prominent films such as Deewaar, Kabhi Kabhie, Trishul, and Namak Halaal. His professional versatility allowed him to move between mass-market commercial features and critically recognized projects like Junoon, Kalyug, and New Delhi Times. His performance in New Delhi Times eventually secured him the National Film Award for Best Actor.
