Sharon den Adel

Symphonic metal vocalist Sharon den Adel began her professional trajectory in 1996, co-founding the band Within Temptation alongside partner Robert Westerholt. Born in Waddinxveen in 1974, she developed a self-taught singing style that eventually defined the group's epic and cinematic sound, leading to significant commercial success after the release of their hit single Ice Queen.

Early Influences and Career Foundations

During her childhood, den Adel spent five years living in Indonesia, where observation of local Balinese dancers later informed her stage performance movements. After living in Suriname, she moved to the Netherlands and faced social difficulties in school due to her distinct clothing and style. By age 14, she was performing with various groups, including the blues rock band Kashiro. She eventually earned a bachelor's degree in fashion design, an expertise she continues to apply by creating the costumes and merchandise for Within Temptation.

Vocal Development and Musical Identity

Possessing a mezzo-soprano voice, den Adel never received formal vocal training. She instead cultivated her technique through years of daily practice. While the band is frequently categorized within metal genres, she specifically describes their work as cinematic and epic in nature. She predominantly writes and sings in English, maintaining that the Dutch language does not complement the stylistic demands of their compositions.

Collaborative Projects and Solo Endeavors

Beyond her primary role in Within Temptation, den Adel has engaged in numerous high-profile collaborations across diverse genres. She provided guest vocals for metal projects including Avantasia, Ayreon, and Timo Tolkki's Avalon, while also working with trance artist Armin van Buuren on the track In and Out of Love. In 2017, she initiated a personal solo project titled My Indigo to process private challenges and overcome a period of creative stagnation, ultimately releasing a self-titled album in 2018.

Public Roles and Personal Life

Den Adel and her long-term partner Robert Westerholt share three children, born in 2005, 2009, and 2011, and the couple married in 2018. While she has frequently declined requests for Within Temptation to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest, she transitioned to a different role within that institution in 2018, serving as the chairperson for the Dutch jury.
