Formative Education and Origins

Born on 11 November 1952 in Mymensingh, East Bengal, during the Dominion of Pakistan, Azad maintained strong ties to her Sylhet hometown. Her foundational education included completing the SSC at Jamalpur Girls High School in 1967 and the HSC at Kumudini College in 1969. Subsequently, she attended the University of Dhaka, securing an honours degree in 1972 and a master's degree in 1973.

Multidisciplinary Literary Practice

Azad’s portfolio encompasses novels, essay collections, and verse, written in both Bangla and English. Her creative work frequently incorporates Asian folk and oral traditions, often manifested through collaborative projects. She has partnered with composers such as Richard Blackford and Kerry Andrew, choreographer Rosemary Lee, visual artist Robin Whitemore, and playwright Mary Cooper.
