Sergey Galitsky

Russian businessman

The retail empire Magnit began with a single grocery store in Krasnodar in 1998, immediately following the Russian financial crisis. Sergey Galitsky, a graduate of the Economics faculty at Kuban State University, transformed this foundation into the largest retail network in Russia by store count, eventually securing a public valuation of $1.9 billion by 2006.

Early Career and Retail Growth

Born in 1967 in Lazarevskoye, a suburb of Sochi, Sergey Nikolayevich Arutyunyan began his professional trajectory while a student. He started working in a Krasnodar commercial bank in 1989. After graduating from university in 1993, he launched Transasia, a firm focused on wholesale cosmetics and perfumery. He exited that venture in 1995 to establish Tander. By 1998, he had completed his first distribution center, pivoting to retail two years later to build the Magnit chain.

Diversification and Sports Investment

Galitsky expanded his interests beyond the retail sector in 2008 by founding FC Krasnodar. He later financed the construction of the club's stadium, which opened in 2013. Surrounding the facility, he developed a significant public park that has since become a prominent local landmark. In 2019, he entered the wine industry, producing vintages under the Galitsky & Galitsky brand using grapes harvested near the village of Gostagaevskaya in Krasnodar Krai.

Corporate Divestment and Assets

In 2018, Galitsky significantly reduced his involvement in his retail firm, selling a 29.1% stake in Magnit to the bank VTB for 138 billion rubles. His financial portfolio has also included the 341-foot megayacht Quantum Blue, which Forbes reported as his property in 2022. The vessel, valued at $213 million and registered in the Cayman Islands, was tracked off the coast of Oman that same year.
