Early Training and Stage Career
Born in Saint Petersburg in 1935, Yursky enrolled at the Faculty of Law of Saint Petersburg State University before transitioning to the performing arts. He studied at the Ostrovsky Leningrad Theatre Institute from 1955 until graduation. In 1957, he joined the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theater, remaining with the company until 2019. His performance in the 1962 production of Wit Works Woe solidified his reputation as a significant actor of his generation.

Yursky moved to Moscow in 1978 to join the Mossovet Theatre, an affiliation that lasted until his death. Beyond his work in the Soviet Union and Russia, he directed and performed in Japan, France, and Belgium. He also shared his expertise at the Top Courses for Scriptwriters and Film Directors, balancing institutional roles with his creative projects in theatre and film.
Cinematic Contributions
Yursky entered film acting with the 1961 production The Man from Nowhere, portraying the character Chudak. He followed this with his performance as Vicknicksor in The Republic of ShKID in 1966. His filmography, which spanned various genres, complemented a prolific career in prose and poetry, which he performed during his solo tours targeting Russian-speaking populations globally starting in the 1990s.
Final Years and Recognition
Throughout his life, Yursky received numerous state honors, including the title of People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1987 and the Order of Honour in 1995. He was later decorated with the Pushkin Medal and the Order For Merit to the Fatherland in both the 3rd and 4th classes. Following his death in Moscow on 8 February 2019, he was interred at the Troyekurovskoye cemetery.
