Sebastian Rode

Sebastian Rode concluded his professional football career in 2024 at Frankfurt's Waldstadion, marking the end of a journey that spanned top-tier German clubs and international youth representation. His time on the pitch was defined by resilience, as he navigated frequent injury setbacks while securing domestic league titles and a major European trophy throughout his sixteen-year tenure in association football.

Early Career and Offenbach

Born in 1990 in Seeheim-Jugenheim, Rode developed within the youth ranks of Kickers Offenbach, joining the club in 2005. He made his professional debut in the 3. Liga on 7 March 2009 against Eintracht Braunschweig. During the 2009-10 season, his progress was interrupted by an ACL injury in his right knee, limiting his contribution to 13 appearances.

Transitions to Munich and Dortmund

Rode moved to Eintracht Frankfurt in 2010, initially enduring cartilage damage in his left knee. Following Frankfurt’s relegation, he stayed to facilitate their promotion back to the Bundesliga. In 2014, he signed with Bayern Munich, where he secured two Bundesliga titles and the DFB-Pokal over two seasons. A transfer to Borussia Dortmund followed in 2016, though a significant injury absence during the 2017-18 season curtailed his impact at the club.

Return to Frankfurt and Final Years

Returning to Frankfurt on loan in 2019, Rode became a central figure under coach Adi Hütter. He made the move permanent in July 2019. In 2021, head coach Oliver Glasner appointed him team captain. His tenure peaked in 2022 when he led the team to a UEFA Europa League victory against Rangers. He retired in 2024 after a final appearance against RB Leipzig.
