Medical Education and Clinical Foundations
Raised in Novi, Michigan, Gupta attended the University of Michigan, where he completed his undergraduate studies before graduating from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1993. His clinical training included a residency in neurological surgery at the University of Michigan Health System, followed by a fellowship at the Semmes Murphy Clinic in Memphis. He serves as an associate professor of neurosurgery at Emory University School of Medicine and functions as an associate chief of the neurosurgery service at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

Gupta joined CNN in 2001, reporting on events ranging from the September 11 attacks to the invasion of Iraq. During the Iraq conflict, he performed emergency neurosurgery while embedded with a Navy medical unit. His field reporting continued in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 Haiti earthquake, where he performed surgery on a child aboard the USS Carl Vinson. Beyond his CNN role, he has contributed to CBS News, appeared as himself in the film Contagion, and hosted various programs including Sanjay Gupta MD and the miniseries Chasing Life.
Literary and Professional Recognition
A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Gupta has authored five books, including the novel Monday Mornings and the health guide Keep Sharp. His writing career includes columns for Time magazine and several New York Times bestsellers. In 2013, he publicly revised his perspective on medical marijuana, citing a shift in his understanding of the drug's therapeutic potential.
