Nielsen competed in Melodifestivalen seven times throughout her career. Her initial attempt in 2001 with "I går, i dag" placed third, followed by a fifth-place finish in 2003 with "Hela världen för mig." After participating in 2005 and 2007, she returned in 2008 with "Empty Room." Although the song won the public televote by over 50,000 votes, the final jury-weighted results placed her second behind Charlotte Perrelli. She eventually secured a win in 2014 and later returned in 2026 to compete with "Waste Your Love."
