A contract signed on 27 December 2014 with Russian club Zenit Kazan, worth over one million dollars, cemented Mir Saeid Marouf Lakerani as one of the world's highest-paid volleyball players of his era. Born in Urmia, Iran, in 1985, the setter rose from his local club to become a pivotal figure in international men’s volleyball.
Early Career and Domestic Success
Marouf began his professional journey at Urmia Moqavemat, his hometown club. His path through the Iranian leagues included stints with Sanam Tehran, Shahrdari Urmia, Matin Varamin, Esteghlal Gonbad, Saipa Tehran, Damash Gilan, and Kalleh Mazandaran. He secured his first Iranian Volleyball Super League championship with Sanam Tehran in 2005, later adding titles with Kalleh Mazandaran in 2012 and Matin Varamin in 2014. In 2016, he joined Paykan Tehran, the country’s most successful team.

After playing for the Iran boys' national team starting in 2001, Marouf joined the senior men’s squad in 2005. He became a fixture by 2007. Following a brief departure in 2011, he returned in 2012 and assumed the role of captain, a position he held while leading Iran through the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic cycles. His tenure included a gold medal at the 2014 and 2018 Asian Games and a bronze at the 2017 World Grand Champions Cup.
International Competition and Accolades
Marouf’s move to Russia in 2015 marked a significant career milestone, as he helped Zenit Kazan capture the European Champions League and the Russian Super League title that same year. He later transferred to China to compete for Beijing BAIC Motor, winning the Chinese Super League in 2021. Throughout his career, he earned recognition as the best setter at the 2014 World League and multiple Olympic qualifying tournaments.
