The first series of the Albanian lek featured designs created by Sadik Kaceli, whose artistic career spanned the mid-twentieth century. Beyond his contributions to the national currency, he helped establish the National Art Gallery of Albania and produced the original coat of arms and flag for the People's Republic of Albania throughout his long residency in Tirana.
Artistic Formation
Born in 1914 in Tirana, Kaceli began his formal artistic engagement through a drawing course initiated in 1931. His foundational education took place at the Harry T. Fultz Technical school starting in 1929. Seeking further expertise in the visual arts, he traveled to France, where he attended the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris between 1936 and 1941.

Kaceli practiced primarily as a painter and sculptor, adhering to the principles of realism. He played an essential role in the development of his country's cultural infrastructure as one of the founders of the National Art Gallery of Albania. His body of work earned him multiple distinctions, including the title of People's Artist of Albania and the Honor Citizen of Tirana medal. In 2016, he received the Honor of Nation Order.
Later Years and Legacy
A monography detailing his life, unpublished notes, and artistic output was published in 2008 and released in an English translation in 2009. The city of Tirana, where he passed away on 24 December 2000, has named a street in his honor. His family history includes his brother Jonuz Kaceli and his son Buron Kaceli, who pursued careers in business and politics respectively.
