Sade Adu emerged as a prominent figure in pop music following the 1984 release of Diamond Life, a debut that secured her status as a top-selling British female vocalist. Born in Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1959, she eventually transitioned from studies at Saint Martin's School of Art to a career defined by her work as a singer-songwriter and composer.
Early Development and Musical Beginnings
Before achieving international success, Sade Adu moved from Nigeria to England at the age of four. She completed her education at Clacton County High School, Colchester Institute, and eventually Saint Martin's School of Art. Her professional life began in fashion and modelling, but she soon joined the band Pride. By 1983, she and bandmates Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale, Paul Denman, and Paul Cook departed Pride to establish the band Sade.
