Early Development and Chelsea Signing
Born in Southwark in 1989, Bertrand began his football education at Gillingham at the age of nine. He attended The Robert Napier School in Kent while advancing through the Gillingham youth ranks. In July 2005, Chelsea acquired his services for an initial fee of £125,000, determined by a tribunal.

Following his move to Chelsea, Bertrand spent several years gaining experience across various clubs. Between 2006 and 2010, he completed loan spells at AFC Bournemouth, Oldham Athletic, Norwich City, Reading, and Nottingham Forest. During his time at Norwich City, local supporters dubbed him 'Plastic' in a nod to the Belgian singer of the same name. While at Reading, he recorded his first professional goal in March 2010.
Establishing a Premier League Career
Bertrand made his Premier League debut for Chelsea on 20 April 2011 against Birmingham City. Throughout the 2011–12 season, he served as cover for Ashley Cole, eventually securing a new four-year contract in July 2011. He reached his 50th appearance for the club in April 2013. Following further loan periods at Aston Villa and Southampton, he joined Southampton permanently in 2015, where he made 240 appearances over seven seasons. His final move came in 2021 when he joined Leicester City.
International Representation
Bertrand participated in the England youth system, appearing for the under-17, under-18, under-19, under-20, and under-21 squads. In addition to his commitment to the Young Lions, he represented Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He earned his first senior cap for England in August 2012 during a friendly match against Italy.
