Academic and Early Athletics
Before his professional football career flourished, Nelsen divided his attention between cricket and football in New Zealand. He attended St Thomas of Canterbury College and Our Lady of the Assumption primary school. In 1997, he relocated to the United States to join Greensboro College, where he reached the NCAA Division III championship match. He later transferred to Stanford University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in political science and receiving recognition as an NSCAA All-American.

Nelsen began his senior career with Christchurch United, playing for the team from 1995 to 1998. He was selected fourth overall in the 2001 MLS SuperDraft by D.C. United. By 2003, he had earned the role of team captain and secured a position on the league’s Best XI, an honor he repeated in 2004 while leading his side to an MLS Cup victory.
Premier League Career
In January 2005, Nelsen joined Blackburn Rovers following a successful trial under manager Mark Hughes. Despite initial visa challenges linked to his home country's global ranking, he became a fixture in the squad, forming a defensive partnership with Andy Todd. Over several seasons, he surpassed 200 appearances for the club. Following a brief period with Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers in 2012, he concluded his playing days.
Coaching and Beyond
Transitioning to management, Nelsen served as the head coach of Major League Soccer side Toronto FC from January 2013 to August 2014. His career has also encompassed work as a writer, and he remains a noted figure in New Zealand sports history for his international representation and professional achievements.
